Hanzi Notes privacy policy
Applies to the web app and the Hanzi Notes browser extension.
What we store
No email, name or password. Each device gets an anonymous account ID. When you link devices, a one-time code (valid 10 minutes, stored only as a hash) joins them to one account; failed code attempts are recorded by IP address for a day to stop guessing.
The words you save and what you add to them: the sentence you found a word in, the page title and address it came from (without its #fragment or login/tracking parameters), your notes, tags and study status.
A daily count of your saves and image reads, to enforce usage limits. Counts older than a week are deleted.
What we send to an AI service
To explain a word, its dictionary entry is sent to Moonshot AI (Kimi). The sentence you saved it with is sent separately to be translated for you. When you read a screenshot or photo, only that image (for screenshots, only the area you selected) is sent to be transcribed. Images are never stored by Hanzi Notes.
What the extension reads
The extension reads text on the pages you visit only to look up the word under your pointer (hover lookup, which you can turn off, or while holding Alt), and it looks them up in a dictionary stored in your browser. Nothing leaves your browser until you save a word or read a screenshot.
Where it lives, and who processes it
Your account and notes are stored with Supabase (database and sign-in) and served by Vercel (hosting). A copy of your notes is kept on each of your devices so they work offline. We don’t sell your data, show ads, or use analytics or tracking cookies.
Your control
Export all your words any time (Settings → Export). Delete your account in Settings; that removes your notes and profile from our servers at once. Leaving the account on a device removes the offline copy from that device.
Dictionary
Definitions come from CC-CEDICT (MDBG), licensed CC BY-SA 4.0, converted to tone-mark pinyin and reformatted.
